It is a bit worrying, though less so than the thought that I might have 
been hallucinating.

Not me! My real headache turns out to have been related to Python 
versions, in that the ROOT binary distribution for SLC4 assumes Python 
2.5, while the OS is distributed with Python 2.3.

And we will be migrating our desktops to SLC5 in due course, so I've 
been keeping an eye on your exchange with Eike.

As long as the last part is a patch number I don't mind too much how 
long the version code is.
