Hm. Interesting. I guess this works for any infrared/collinear-safe 
observable. The only advantage of my strategy is that if you don't have 
a safe observable it will show in the error bars. And it should work for 
generators which don't have this feature.

Yes a switch would be good. An alternative would be to eg. double the 
binning in the temporary filling histograms, so that the smearing would 
be less visible in the end result.
