I believe so. I'll have a go at submitting a job using CEDAR that requires the ATLAS software be installed. Like Frank said, the current tarball size is about 80 MB. Anyone submitting jobs through ganga (most ATLAS grid users I guess) will be regularly uploading 10 MB tarballs to the grid anyway, so I think if we can reduce our tarballs by about a factor 10 there's nothing to be gained by installing. Maybe we could split the libraries up into different generators, as has already been suggested. All of the LHAPDF files are probably the single biggest item (lhapdf tarball from hepforge alone is 48MB), so if we can only wget the pdf we actually need then that's already a big decrease in size! A simple way to do this would be to run rivet, parse the error message if no lhpdf file is found, download only that file and run again. Perhaps some mechanism to find out the pdf file ahead of time could be added to a future release of LHAPDF?
