Diagnosing this for the bug report, I noticed it has been kind of a false 
alarm, caused by the configuration of Durham's desktops: configure seems 
to disable shared libraries because sunstudio12's executables are in the 
PATH. Taking that out, it enables shared libraries just fine. 
Interestingly this doesn't happen with autoreconf'd HepMC, but still it's 
hardly a bug I can report to HepMC.

So I'll go ahead with the changes I proposed minus the autoreconf.
