Yes, but surely that "kit" has a known path structure. This is what
needs to go into configure. AFS only appears as a temporary location in
DESTDIR.

You might _want_ to, but it's a broken idea to copy full installs
somewhere else. Also, now you ask the original packages to adapt to the
broken model of how you think it should work. There's a reason apt or
yum handle pre- and postprocessing steps in the packaging tool, and not
in the original code tarball.

To summarize: don't try to be lazy in the wrong place, configure and
build the code for the kits separately!
