The problem is the plural with 'sites'. In general each site will have a different place. Honestly, you do not think that having an installation relocatable is better? Perhaps the solution I proposed is not good enough but I am sure a solution can be worked out to cover all cases.

I would like to add another problem with the current system for which the DESTDIR will not help. If you have package A that uses package B using the "B_config" script  to get the usage details. If you build both and only on success install them to the final destination it will not work. Indeed this is the way we detected that the generated XXX_config file was not relocatable.
